Soweto Kinch at The Flyover Show, Birmingham 18th August 2012

Soweto Kinch at The Flyover Show, Birmingham 18th August 2012

Award winning alto-saxophonist and MC Soweto Kinch is one of the most exciting and versatile young musicians in both the British jazz and hip hop scenes. Undoubtedly, one of the few artists in either genre with a degree in Modern History from Oxford University he has amassed an impressive list of accolades and awards on both sides of the Atlantic – including a Mercury Music Prize nomination, two UMA Awards and a MOBO for best Jazz Act in 2003. In October 2007, he won his second MOBO Award, at the O2 Arena, London where he was announced as the winner in the Best Jazz Act category- fending off stiff competition from the likes of Wynton Marsalis.

His skills as a hip hop MC and producer have also garnered him recognition in the urban music world: having supported the likes of KRS ONE, Dwele and TY, and being championed by the likes of Mos Def, Rodney P and BBC 1-Xtra’s Twin B.

Kinch’s projects also extend beyond recorded albums. Writing the score for Jonzi D’s Hip Hop Theatre production Markus the Sadist (2010), and Sampad’s In The Further Soil (2010), a dance-theatre piece. Kinch also wrote and acted in the latter piece, which toured throughout India for a month. Most recently he was commissioned to write a new score for the Hitchcock silent movie ‘The Ring’ which received a standing ovation.

‘At the BFI launch, Soweto Kinch brought the house down, playing part of his sax score to a scene from The Ring.’ David Gritten The Telegraph

In 2011 he collaborated with the BBC and Drum and Bass producer Goldie. By Royal Appointment is 3-part prime time reality music show, following Goldie, Soweto, Guy Chambers and Ms Dynamite as they discover and coach a group of 12 vulnerable young mentees towards their first live performance before HM Prince Harry at Buckingham Palace. Kinch, describes how the programme (transmitted in February, 2011) really allowed him to extended his work as a curator and mentor, “it was a radically fresh approach to discovering and nurturing new talent, and an antedote to the usual pop formulae and manufactured music.”

His last release The New Emancipation draws its inspiration from 19th century work songs and early blues, exploring the modern resonances of the emancipation story. From debt/wage slavery, to creative oppression in the music industry and ideas of race in a post-Obama age it combines this rich musical inheritance and revisits it with stellar jazz ensemble and modern hip hop production. Number one on the Rise Best Albums of 2010, the album features a prestigious international lineup, including Byron Wallen, Justin Brown (US), Eska Mtungwazi, Femi Temowo, Shabaka Hutchings and Harry Brown among others.

Currently touring this material with his core quartet, Kinch has earned a number of 5 star reviews for his recent live performances. His performance at the Queen Elizabeth Hall (2010 London Jazz Festival) confirmed Kinch as a major figure in the UK scene, as The Evening Standard’s Jack Massarik described, “it was hard to imagine stronger contemporary jazz being played anywhere else in the world.”

2011 saw Soweto and his quartet taking his music to increasingly diverse audiences across the world, including territories from the USA and Germany to Dubai, Morocco and Botswana. And entrenching his signature sound, mixing jazz and hip hop.

2012 will see the release of his much anticipated forth album based on the seven deadly sins which was showcased at eXplorations @ King’s Place at the end of January to criticial acclaim. The album release will be supported by a UK tour in October 2012.

Lady Leshurr at The Flyover Show, Birmingham 18th August 2012

Lady Leshurr 2 at The Flyover Show, Birmingham 18th August 2012

Birmingham born Lady Leshurr is a female MC/singer and producer, currently taking the world by storm. She has developed her own unique style, having been making music since the age of six. Her unique sound and seamless flow has an instant likeability, complimented by a melodic singing voice and harmonies that just pour off her tongue. Her commercial style is backed up and accompanied by fast-paced and, at times, fierce lyrical display. It’s this brilliance that the masses all over the UK, and indeed the world, tend to LOVE.

A powerful performance on last year’s Glastonbury Introducing stage has thrown Leshurr further into the limelight and she is fast becoming known as “the one to watch” (Mike Skinner – Guardian Newspaper). Her stage presence is second to none and her writing talents are simply enviable.

Leshurr’s material blends her unique sound with popular genres encompassing house, hip hop, dancehall and pop. Citing Lil Wayne as one of her key influences, Leshurr could already be his female equivalent. She loves to experiment with her musical productions and constantly seeks to further her vision to create a sound that takes music to a whole new level.

Leshurr has featured on tracks with Tinie Tempah, Wiley, Lethal B and Dot Rotten, to name just a few, and since signing a publishing deal with EMI, she was worked with a range of producers including R1, Noisa, Loco and Wizzy Wow. She was a part of the Female Takeover alongside Lioness and Baby Blue, and was also invited by DJ Cameo to feature on his collaboration track, “Who’s Dat?”. Leshurr recently supported Wiley on his nationwide tour and has just finished touring with Lethal B and Ghetts as part of the Bigga Fish tour.

Currently the talk of the UK’s urban scene, Leshurr now has the support of the UK’s premiere hip hop DJs, Tim Westwood, Mista Jam, Target and Cameo; and she is beginning to grab the attention of both Radio One and Galaxy Networks. Her recent cover of the Chris Brown/Busta Rhymes collab “Look At Me Now” has become a global phenomenon, amassing in excess of 100,000 hits in half a day on www.worldstarhiphop.com.

Collectively – Lady Leshurr’s music videos and freestyle uploads have racked up MILLIONS of views, acting as clear proof that she is truly loved by the members of her huge fan base and indeed the general public alike.

In June 2011, Lady Leshurr launched her own record label, Gutter Strut Recordings, in partnership with her manager. To compliment the music releases, she has designed a range of merchandise which is now on sale. (Namely the hugely popular “Friggin L” clothing line)

To add to her musical talents, Leshurr played one of the lead females in Vertigo Films’ 2009 critically acclaimed movie “1 Day”. A talented actress as well as an artist, Leshurr simply loves to perform. Overall, Leshurr is an immensely talented, ambitious and truly unique individual who continues to grow from strength to strength.

Film: The Flyover Show South Africa 2012. Come & join us in Birmingham on 18th August

Saturday 31st March 2012 saw the first Flyover Show in South Africa. We had a great week in Kliptown, Soweto holding workshops and music sessions in schools and local community centres. We worked with over 2300 young people and children in the lead up to the event. The event itself attracted over 2500 people and involved local MCs that we met during the week as well as musicians that are long established collaborators with Soweto Kinch. Highlights of the day included the exhilarating opening performance by the Kliptown Youth Program Gumboot dancers and a moving moment when Tumi performed his iconic tune 1976 in the heart of Freedom Square.

A few words from Soweto Kinch:

‘Flyover Show South Africa was an incredible success both in terms of transforming the surrounding space and bringing so many different world class artists together. There was a huge amount of artistic good will, which encouraged unexpected collaborations and everyone understood the wider reasons for staging the show in Kliptown. People connected with the historical significance of Freedom Square, and the potential for art to go on transforming communities in the future. Most enduringly for many MCs it was the first time performing with live musicians, and vice versa the first time a number of musicians had encountered the SA Hip Hop underground. In one instance a group had reformed especially for this performance. In a setting where it is hard for groups to tour continuously, it was powerful to have created an outlet for groups to reconnect with their fan base as well as create new followers. The entire week of workshops and rehearsals meant that it was a genuine collaboration between South African and British artists and there is plenty to build on for the future. We want to thank everyone who performed and especially all those who came to watch, we hope to see everyone again next year’

Soweto Kinch talks about taking The Flyover Show to South Africa in 2012

UK hip-hop artist Soweto Kinch will host a groundbreaking show featuring a diverse and brilliant line-up in Freedom Square on 31st March 2012. Among the artists that have confirmed their appearance at the Flyover Show are Tumi from Tumi and the Volume, Soweto Kinch and band, Feya Faku, ESKA, Jonzi D, Bokani Dyer, DJ Raiko, Yugen Blakrok, Gin-I Grindith, Robo The Technician, Hymphatic Thabs, and the Kliptown Youth Program Gumboot Dancers.

Kinch, one of the most exciting and versatile young musicians in both the British jazz and hip-hop scenes, will bring his iconic festival from the streets of Birmingham to the streets of the township he shares his name with – Soweto. The Flyover Show is Kinch’s project and has been a day-long, music and arts festival that has taken place for five years in its unusual setting beneath a flyover in Birmingham, UK.

The Birmingham festival has featured artists as diverse as Goldie, Akala and Omar and continues to build on its reputation, bringing world class entertainment to an often forgotten corner of Birmingham.

This year the show will not only take place in Birmingham, but in the historic Freedom Square – also known as the Walter Sisulu Square of dedication in Kliptown, Soweto.

“Freedom Square is in many ways the most natural place to extend the concept of The Flyover Show. I have both a deep artistic and personal connection to Johannesburg and I’m really excited about expanding this concept there,” said Kinch, who is also an award winning alto-saxophonist.

“As an area with rich historic and often unappreciated traditions it has much similarity with the areas in Birmingham where the show originated,” he added.
